Could My Prenatal Vitamins Make Me Feel Sick Or Nauseated?

Prenatal vitamins have a lot going for them. For starters, they act as a nutritional safety net of sorts for expectant mothers to help reduce the risk of both birth defects and preterm birth. Secondly, preliminary research suggests they may lessen the chance of autism. And thirdly, supplementing with vitamin B6 has been linked with reduced levels of morning sickness. However, here’s the rub, for all the good prenatal vitamins undoubtedly do, they are by no means a cure-all. And, pertinently, this just so happens to be especially true when it comes to nausea.

You see, even allowing for vitamin B6’s nausea-quelling properties, there’s still no denying the fact that prenatal vitamins can make some pregnant women feel nauseated. More to the point, this is particularly true in cases where there is a background of morning sickness. Now, if we consider that as many as 80% of pregnant women report some form of morning sickness, it becomes clear that we are not talking about an isolated phenomenon here. Rather, we are actually talking about something which touches the lives of a lot of pregnant women.

Thankfully, however, that’s not to say that you just have to sit back and accept feeling sick either. As such, let’s now take a run through some of the steps you can take to help minimize your nausea.

Check the Iron Content

When it comes to prenatal vitamins, iron is more often than not the root cause of nausea. If your prenatal vitamin happens to contain in excess of 27mg - which is the recommended daily intake - then it may pay to consult with a doctor about switching to an alternative with a lower dose of iron. After that, if your nausea still persists, then you may even need to switch to a prenatal vitamin without any iron.

Make Sure to Eat First

Taking prenatal vitamins on an empty stomach can be a recipe for disaster. You see, plainly put, it’s just
far easier to stomach a prenatal vitamin after eating. At times, however, this can be easier said than done. After all, even the very thought of food can be unappealing when you’re feeling nauseated and it can be all too easy, at such times, to pass over the opportunity to eat. This reaction, unfortunately, only makes matters worse. Without any food to digest, stomach acids, in fact, act to worsen nausea.

Change Up Your Routine

If your nausea happens to come in waves throughout the day, then it can make sense to adapt your vitamin routine to match. Try taking your prenatal vitamin during the time windows when your nausea ebbs and see if that makes a difference.

Divide the Dose Up

Instead of taking a single daily pill, sometimes it can actually pay off to divide the dose up across the day. The thinking is that smaller doses may be easier for the stomach to handle and thereby offset nausea. When it comes to this approach, you have two options. You can either seek out a vitamin formulation which is divided into daily microdoses, or, where possible, you can even split a single pill in half and take it that way.

Increase Your Intake of Vitamin B6

As already noted, vitamin B6 is associated with reduced levels of nausea and vomiting. It stands to reason therefore that upping your dosage, following consultation with your doctor, could make an impactful difference.

The Final Word on Prenatal Vitamins and Nausea

Unfortunately, as we have seen, prenatal vitamins can make you feel sick or nauseated. However, while that is a definite letdown, it doesn’t take away from the fact that there are a number of proactive steps you can take to help minimize the risk of nausea from taking prenatal vitamins.
